Abstract

This study was conducted to compare nursing activities in terms of the number of the doctors' orders according to patient per year for patients who were cared for in general medical wards of a university hospital. This study will contribute to
the
development of inservice education programs for nurses.
The subjects of this study were patients being treated for angina pectoris who were hospitaliized form September 1 through December 31, 1985 and 1990.
Data used for this study were obtained from data collected from the medical records of these patients in Hong, Hye Kyung's study (1991). Data were analyzed between December 1 through december 14, 1991.
Data for this study included 1) demographic factors, 2) admission related factors and 3) information obtained from a from developed by the researcher to identify the nursing activities.
@ES The major results of this study were as follows:
@EN 1. Significant differences were found in the number of tests between 1985(825) and 1990 (1,053) an increase of 127.64% (t=4.11, d.f.=78,p<.001). Nursing activities related to these medical tests increased from 630 in 1985 to 787 in 1990
(124.92%)
(t=3.38,d.f.-78,p<.001), X-rays, from 34 in 1985 to 45 in 1990 (132.35%), EKGs, from 67 in 1985 to 77 in 1990 (114.93%) and special tests from 94 in 1985 144 in 1990 (153.19%) (t=3.80, d.f.=78,p=.001).
2. Significant differences were found in the number of therapies between 1985 (22) and 1990 (33), an increase of 150.0% (t=5.75, d.f.=53,p<.001). These results included Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, from 2 in 1985 to 22 in 1990
(1100.0%)
3. Significant differences were found in the number of medications between 1985 (301) and 1990 (434), an increase of 144.19% (t=3.94,d.f.=78,p<.01). These mediations included Antiarrythmic drugs (133.33%), Vasodilators (105.69%), Adrenergic beta
receptor blockers (500.00%), Calcium entry blockers (800.00%), Psychotropics (640.00%), Analgesics (147.50%), G-I medications (200.0%), and Herben, Adalat of Vasodilators and Calcium entry blockers (200.0%), Especially there were no orders for
Heparine,
Urokinase of Drugs for hypolipoproteinemia and Artherosclerosis (90.01%) and Diuretics (66.67%) showed a decreased in 1990 compared to 1985. Especially there were no orders for Verapamil in 1990 in spite of 11 in 1985.
According to these results, the number of tests, therapies and medications were changed distinctively between in 1985 and in 1990. This indicates professionalization and high technology in nursing activities in the care of patients with angina
pectoris.
These results need to be considered in the development of inservice education programs.
